The 2019 SCCA Solo National Championships was a wet and wild one. Heavy rain fell in Indianola, IA just as the competition in 3rd heat began causing the dirt to turn into slippy mud causing very tricky conditions. It looks like we aren’t going to have wait much longer for Ken Block’s Gymkhana 8! The popular YouTube video series will release it’s 8th installment on February 29th, but that wasn’t the only news from the Hoonigan Racing Team. Also revealed today was a new “Ultra-Reflective” livery, that LITerally changes color depending on how and what light hits it. I’m not sure we should be surprised that Block would try to one up his crazy/fun liveries, but this does look pretty crazy. Finally, it appears that Block has a new tire sponsor in Toyo Tires. He will be running Toyo Proxes R1R, I would presume all year, but at least for the Gymkhana video.

A couple year’s ago, Ken Block set out to build a car that he could use for rally, rallycross and Gymkhana and boy did he ever. He drove the Ford Fiesta HFHV to victory’s in the Global Rallycross series, Rally America and more. Oh yah, he also made one of those Gymkhana YouTube series videos (it only has 33 million views) that he does from time to time. Now it’s for sale and you can hoon just like Ken Block for the low, low price of $362,000 USD. That might seem kind of steep but it’s really not that bad considering that it comes complete with the full rally, rallycross and Gymkhana set ups from the Hoonigan Racing Division.

Well, we are now almost a fourth of the way through 2015, so I guess it’s about time one of the most famous driving personalities in the U.S. announced his schedule for the year. Apparently rally will not be a priority for Mr. Hoonigan himself in 2015, with only 4 rally events in total on the calendar and only 2 of those will be stateside at Rally America New England Forest Rally and Lake Superior Performance Rally. If you want to see one of the most exciting drivers in the world ripping it up on gravel roads, hopefully you live in the East half of the country or New Zealand. More…

2014 marked the return of the RallyCross National Championships to Nebraska. The inaugural National Championships were held in Hastings, NE just a few short years ago. Since then the number of competitors has almost doubled to over 100 and continues to grow every year. The 2014 edition was held at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, NE on Oct. 4 & 5.

Christy Carlson, GotCone blog contributor and Team Gotcone driver is set to enter her first stage rally event next weekend, Nov. 13, the Rally America Nocona Stomp Rally in Nocona, TX. Christy will be driving a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R, that has a long history of rallying, having competed in 20+ rally events. This is the same Sentra SE-R that Christy drove to a 7th place finish, just out of the trophies, at the 2010 SCCA National Rallycross Championships held in Fountain, CO.

With SCCA Rallycross Nationals in Colorado Springs, CO coming up in just a couple weeks, I am reminded of the differences between Solo and Rallycross driving, and have begun preparing myself mentally for the switch. For SCCA Solo I have used a STU-prepped 2006 STI. Plenty of power, grippy nissan tires, and stiff suspension the idea in the drivers mind is to be precise, and attack each element individually, yet constantly scanning and looking ahead, trusting the car to complete the element. However, SCCA Rallycross is a whole different beast.
With Rallycross, I am switching to a FWD, low-power 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R, on the original tires. First, every corner is just a ‘fraction’ of an element, and Rallycross requires you to string them together. Looking ahead is just as essential, if not more, although the elements tend to be less intense and most-often naturally flow into each-other. Weight transfer into corners is key, as the grip will not be present and the car’s motion will propagate from one turn into the next. I’m hoping that I can effectively make the switch between the styles, as ProSolo and Solo Nationals are two weeks following, and the goal is to do my best in all of them.
Wish me luck as I attempt to trophy in all three!
